Manchester United have agreed to sell Isak Hansen-Aaroen to Werder Bremen on deadline day of the January transfer window.

The Manchester Evening News revealed yesterday that United were open to selling the highly-rated teenager after it became clear he would not be signing a new contract.

United would have been entitled to compensation for him even if he left for free in the summer but they have decided to sell him for a higher fee this month while he still retains a transfer valuation. It is also understood that the sale will include a significant future sell-on fee and although there is no future buyback clause, United would have the right to match any future bid made for him.

Hansen-Aaroen was initially open to making things work at United but sources close to the player have revealed he felt frustrated by the lack of first-team opportunities afforded to him. There is also a suggestion the player had unrealistic expectations about the chances he would be afforded at Old Trafford.

United wanted the Norwegian to sign a new four-and-a-half-year deal before they could send him out on loan this month, but the terms offered did not come close to packages he could expect to receive elsewhere and he was left unconvinced by his own pathway to the first team.

Hansen-Aaroen has not been short of interest, with a host of top clubs signalling an interest in his signature; however, it is felt that a move to Werder Bremen will give him the best opportunity to play at a competitive level.

Werder are currently 9th in the German Bundesliga table and are looking to reshape their squad for next season, given they are comfortably clear of the relegation zone but well off the European qualification positions.

He has trained multiple times with the first team this month but was overlooked for selection for their FA Cup victories over both Wigan and Newport County, while other academy graduates were given a chance.

United signed Hansen-Aaroen from Tromso in 2019, with the playmaker joining United's youth ranks in the summer of 2020 when he turned 16
